Thinking about friendship

I'm doing a series on David's life and one of my messages was about the friendship David and Jonathan shared.  I wanted a couple of good quotes on friendship and ended up finding a lot more than I needed at one website (link at bottom of page).  Anyway, here are the ones I culled from the page.  I think the abundance of quotations speaks to how important friends are, don't you?

Truly great friends are hard to find, difficult
to leave, and impossible to forget
  . . . G. Randolph

Friendship, said Pooh, is a very comforting thing.

The glory of friendship is not the outstretched hand, nor the
kindly smile nor the joy of companionship; it is the spiritual
inspiration that comes to one when he discovers that someone else
believes in him and is willing to trust him
.... Ralph Waldo Emerson

Of all the things which wisdom provides to
make us entirely happy, much the greatest
is the possession of friendship

A friend is someone who knows the song in
your heart, and can sing it back to you when
you have forgotten the words
....Donna Roberts

A true friend walks in when the rest
of the world walks out

Friends are God's way of taking care of us....Unknown

It is my friends who have made the story of my life.
In a thousand ways they have turned my limitations into
beautiful privileges, and enabled me to walk serene and
happy through the shadow cast by my deprivation
....Helen Keller.

So long as we are loved by others I should say
that we are almost indispensable; and no man is
useless while he has a friend
....Robert Louis Stevenson.

Real friendship is shown in times of trouble;
prosperity is full of friends

Friendship improves happiness, and
abates misery, by doubling our joys,
and dividing our grief
....Joseph Addison.

It's all love or sex these days. Friendship is almost
as quaint and outdated a notion as chastity. Soon friends
will be like the elves and the pixies -- fabulous
mythical creatures from a distant past
....C. S. Lewis.

A friend is a close companion on the rainy days,
someone to share with through every phase.
Forgiving and helping to bring the best,
believing the good and forgetting the rest
.... Unknown

The steady discipline of intimate
friendship with Jesus results in men
becoming like Him
....Harry Emerson Fosdick

Go through your phone book, call people and ask them
to drive you to the airport. The ones who will drive
you are your true friends. The rest aren't bad
people; they're just acquaintances
....Jay Leno.

Friendship is a sheltering tree....Samuel Taylor Coleridge

Friendship is a strong and habitual
inclination in two persons to promote the
good and happiness of one another
. . . Unknown

I don't need a friend who changes when I change
and who nods when I nod; my
shadow does that much better

I do not believe that friends are necessarily
the people you like best, they are merely
the people who got there first
....Peter Ustinov.

Friendship is unnecessary, like philosophy, like
art...It has no survival value; rather is one of
those things that give value to survival
....C. S. Lewis.

A friend is one who knows who you are, understands
where you have been, accepts what you have become,
and still gently allows you to grow
....William Shakespeare.

I didn't find my friends, the good God
gave them to me
....Ralph Waldo Emerson.

If we would build on a sure foundation in
friendship, we must love friends for their
sake rather than for our own
....Charlotte Bronte.

No birth certificate is issued when friendship is born.
There is nothing tangible. There is just a feeling that
your life is different and that your capacity to love and
care has miraculously been enlarged without any effort on
your part. It's like having a tiny apartment and somebody
moves in with you. But instead of becoming cramped and crowded,
the space expands, and you discover rooms you never knew you had until your friend moved in with you
....Steve Tesich.

A real friend is one who helps us to
think our best thoughts, do our noblest
deeds, and be our finest selves

A true friend is someone who thinks that you
are a good egg even though he knows that
you are slightly cracked
....Bernard Meltzer.
