What's that smell?

Our church recently had a divider curtain installed in our Family Center to increase the ways we can utilize our space. It had a smell that reminded me of a new shower curtain. Since it was a LARGE curtain, it had a LARGE smell that seemed to be everywhere. Even at the other end of the building I could smell it (and my sense of smell is nothing to brag about).

The kicker came later when I got some ice out of our kitchen. I popped a couple of pieces in my mouth and immediately I could tell something was wrong with it. It had a sharp, plastic flavor to it --- what I’m guessing it would taste like if you bit into a new shower curtain. The odor from the divider curtain had leeched into the ice!

Who would have ever thought a divider curtain could flavor ice cubes?

The Scripture tells us:

But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumphal procession in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of him. For we are to God the aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing. To the one we are the smell of death; to the other, the fragrance of life. (2 Corinthians 2:14-16)

And what can God do with an aroma? Anything He wants! I know this --- if a divider curtain can flavor a piece of ice, then God can (and does) use our lives to "spread everywhere the fragrance and knowledge of him." We are the aroma of Christ and God uses us to affect things. We may not always be aware of how He does it, but He is using us nonetheless.

This story is all over Scripture, isn’t it? God uses two loaves and five fish, a bronze snake on a pole, five stones and a sling, or whatever and makes something marvelous out of it.

Never underestimate what God can do through you. Make yourself available to Him and let Him take care of the rest.
